So unless you’ve been living under a rock this past week you’ll have caught the A List wedding of George Clooney to Amal Alamuddin. In Venice no less. I have to say, even the cheesy shots of the Clooneys sailing off in a boat called Amore (groan) headed for their honeycloon (extra groan) made me all sorts of sentimental for my own trip to Venice this time last year. After all, movie stars and super-chic international human rights lawyers are no match for Venice in all its glory.
The former playground of Lord Byron oozes an irresistible decadence and the surreal sight of a city built on water with no roads or cars, combined with the sheer romance of cruising in gondolas with velvet interiors, makes Venetian life rank pretty high in the glamour stakes. The opulent palaces of the Grand Canal have a touch of decay that only adds to the historic magic and approaching the city from the water and seeing the ornate Doge’s Palace creep into view is one travel experience to lust after. Even though you’ll pay €15 for an ice-cream and you’ll queue for an hour to gaze at the lavish ceilings of St Mark’s Basilica (one word – incredible) this is one city that needs to be seen to be believed. Put simply, Venice is a dream.
